What Is Softwood?

Softwood is a type of wood that comes from coniferous trees, such as pine, spruce, fir, cedar, and hemlock. It’s generally less dense than hardwood, making it easier to work with and less expensive. Around 80% of all timber comes from softwood.

Softwood is commonly used for a wide range of building and construction purposes, including for framing, decking, and furniture, as well as for doors, windows, and other architectural elements. Despite its name, softwood is still a strong and durable material that can be relied on for years to come.

What Are the Benefits of Softwood Garage Doors?

There are plenty of great reasons to choose softwood for your garage doors, including:

Cost-effectiveness:
Softwood garage doors are typically less expensive than hardwood garage doors, making them a cost-effective
option for homeowners on a budget.

Natural beauty:
Softwood has a natural, warm appearance that can add a touch of rustic beauty to your home’s exterior. It can also be easily stained or painted to match the overall look of your home.

Sustainability:
Softwood is a sustainable building material that can be grown and harvested
relatively quickly compared to hardwood, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

Durability:
Although not as strong as hardwood, softwood garage doors can still be durable and long-lasting when properly
maintained and treated with wood preservatives.

Softwood Garage Door FAQs

How long do softwood doors last?

Although softwood doors are generally less expensive than their hardwood counterparts, they may not have as long a lifespan. However, by treating your softwood door regularly with wood preserver, you can extend its lifespan to approximately 15 to 20 years.

If you’re looking for a wooden door with an even longer lifespan, why not consider one of our hardwood doors instead?

Are your softwood doors treated?

While our softwood doors are supplied untreated as standard, we can coat them in a protective treatment for an additional cost. This will help lengthen its lifespan and protect it against decay and insect damage.

Do you offer installation?

We offer a full measurement, supply, and free delivery service for customers in Dorset and within a 100-mile radius. We can also supply our softwood doors to the rest of the UK, though you’ll need to find an installer or install them yourself.

What treatment do you apply to your softwood doors?

We use Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment in Light Brown, which absorbs deeply into the wood for long-lasting protection. For an additional cost, we can provide an extra tin with your order.

Are all of your softwood doors handmade?

Yes! We handcraft all of our doors in our two workshops in Poole, Dorset. We tailor each door to your exact specifications and measurements, so no two are ever the same.
