What Is Hardwood?

Hardwood is a type of wood that comes from broadleaved trees like maple, ash, beech, and oak. It’s denser than softwood, making it more resistant to wear and tear, and usually has a more complex grain pattern.

Thanks to its toughness, hardwood is a popular choice for furniture, flooring, structural supports, musical instruments, and much more.

Which Hardwoods Do We Use for Our Garage Doors?

We primarily use three types of hardwood when crafting our doors: Sapelle, Iroko, and European oak. All three are tough, long-lasting, and visually stunning. They’re also more sustainable than other hardwoods, as they’re widely available and can be harvested responsibly from well-managed forests.

Sapele

Sapele is a type of hardwood that comes from the African mahogany tree. Known for its beautiful reddish-brown colour and distinctive ribbon-like grain pattern, it gives doors a striking appearance when finished. Sapele is a particularly durable and dense hardwood, with a Janka hardness rating of 1510.

Iroko

Iroko wood is a type of hardwood that comes from the Milicia excelsa tree, which is native to tropical regions of Africa. It has a Janka hardness rating of 1260 and is known for its elegant golden-brown colour, which can darken over time with exposure to light. Thanks to its medium to coarse texture and slightly interlocked grain pattern, it has a truly distinctive look and feel.

European Oak

European oak, also known as English oak or French oak, is a type of hardwood that comes from the Quercus robur or Quercus petraea trees, which are native to Europe. It has a Janka hardness rating of 1360 and is popular for its distinctive light to medium brown colour. It has a straight grain pattern and a coarse texture, giving it a charmingly rustic finish.

European oak doors are available on a POA basis, so please let us know in advance if you’d like your door to be made from it.
