Wooden Garage Doors FAQs

Wondering if a wooden door is the right choice for your garage? To help you decide, we’ve answered some of our most commonly asked questions below.

Are wooden garage doors secure?

Wood has been used as a building material for tens of thousands of years, for good reason! When crafted to a high standard, wooden garage doors can be just as secure as steel or aluminium, without sacrificing their naturally elegant looks.

Why choose a wooden garage door over a metal one?

There are plenty of reasons to choose a wooden garage door over a metal one.

The most obvious is aesthetics: wooden garage doors avoid the cold, industrial look of metal doors and add a touch of warmth and character to your garage. They’re also an excellent natural insulator.

High-quality wooden garage doors can last for decades with proper maintenance. Even better, they can be custom-built to fit unique garage openings, and can be designed with a variety of features, such as windows or decorative hardware.

How do I maintain and protect my wooden garage door?

Proper maintenance can extend the life of your wooden garage door for years and keep it looking and working its best. Although wooden gates are naturally resilient to the elements, their colour may fade without treatment.

We recommended re applying a good quality wood preserver once or twice a year. We use Barrettine wood preserver, which we keep in stock, if you would like to purchase some let us know.

Are wooden garage doors well insulated?

Timber has a number of qualities to make it well insulated. Its cellular structure consists of tiny air pockets that help trap and hold air, which is a poor conductor of heat. It also has a low thermal conductivity, which means that it doesn’t transfer heat as easily as other materials. This makes it an effective barrier against heat loss or gain.

How long do wooden garage doors typically last?

With proper maintenance, your garage door will perform its best for up to 30 years or more (depending on the chosen timber). The exact lifespan of your door depends on how regularly you use it, as well as how exposed it is to the elements.

Are there different styles and finishes available for wooden garage doors?

Yes! We can craft your door from either softwood or a variety of hardwoods, with each type of wood having a different hue, grain, and texture. We have a wide variety of door styles to choose from but can also create something totally bespoke if you prefer.

Should I choose a hardwood or softwood garage door?

That all depends on your budget and preferences. Hardwood doors are generally denser and harder than softwood, which means they can withstand more wear and tear over time. They’re also more resistant to rot and insect damage. On the other hand, they’re more expensive than softwood and tend to have a darker hue, which may not be your preferred option.

Do you offer installation on your wooden garage doors?

We offer a full measurement, delivery, and installation service for customers in Dorset and within an 80-mile radius. While we can also supply our doors to customers elsewhere in the UK, installation services are not included and would need to be arranged independently.
